47 Ronin Manga

47 Ronin Manga is a comic book project created and written by screenwriter Fabrizio Capigatti and illustrated by the artist Emanuele Tenderini and produced in collaboration with the professors and the students of the Department of Asian and Mediterranean African studies of the Ca’ Foscari University in Venice. The project is supported by the Foundation Italia-Giappone and the Kyoto International Manga Museum.

The story of the 47 Ronin is one of the most celebrated in the history of the samurai.

The story talks about the real events happened between 1701 and 1703, when 47 ronin decided to avenge their master Asano Takuminokami, who was forced to commit seppuku by Kira Yoshinaka.

As a kōke (master of ceremonies), Kira oversaw matters of protocol. In 1701, he was assigned the task of tutoring Asano Naganori in matters of protocol in preparation for an upcoming visit by representatives of the Emperor. According to the stories, Kira was corrupt and demanded bribes for the tutoring, which Asano refused to pay. Kira then began to publicly insult Asano, calling him an ignorant and unmannered rural boor. On the day when the envoys were scheduled to meet the shogun at Edo Castle, Asano drew his wakizashi and attempted to kill Kira in retaliation for the insults. For this, Asano was sentenced to commit seppuku, his house abolished and his retainers branded ronin, while Kira went unpunished.

The aim of the project 47 Ronin Manga is to create a manga that visually reinterpret this historical event narrated in the Chushingura.

From the aesthetic point of view, this presupposes the research of a particular style based on the visual and narrative impact of the Bunraku.

The artist has designed a drawing with a style turned to interpret the characters in the manga as a real puppet, which is very close to the ukiyo-e by Utagawa Kuniyoshi, reworked through the use of IT tools.
This exhibition will allow you to see the work of the authors and that has led to the development of the studies of the characters, the storyboard work and some manga pages.
